observation

As I was sitting in my social problems class, we were talking about the three day weekend coming up. The class was Sociology 150, so as you can imagine, most of the people in the class are freshmen. So when our professor asks who is leaving town for the weekend, 80-90% of the hands in the room go up. This baffles me. The majority of them just moved here 5 days ago and they're already going home.

The point of this? I decided today that when my kids go off to college, they're going to be told they can't come home for at least a month. Part of going to college is meeting new people and getting used to a new place. You can't very well adjust if you're not there.

Why I have that song in my head, I have no idea. And I don't have it on my iPod, so it'll be stuck in my head for a while.

Classes started this week. My last semester is finally underway. I've been to three of my four classes thus far. They seem like they'll be ok, if not interesting and maybe fun...especially my social problems class. The fourth one I go to this afternoon. It's going to be lame. I have no idea why I need introduction to computers as a business econ major, but the powers that be have deemed it so. It'll be an easy A, but it'll be hard to sit through 3 times a week. It's computer science 105. My two "real" classes (Industrial Organization and Business Strategy & Policy) are probably going to be a lot of work but in terms of the material we're covering, they should be ok. In industrial organization, two of the topics we're covering are gambling and the beer brewing industries. yay!

I'm hoping classes don't cause a whole lot of stress this semester. I'm stressed out enough the way it is. I'm just ready for it to be the middle of December so I can get on with my life. There are a select few that I will miss here in Brookings. But I can always come back and visit.

I got to work at 7:59 and punched in. Then I got caught up with my normal morning reading. After that I ran payments because people like it when their bills get paid on time. So I come back to my desk and am trying to get some work done. It's been hard enough to get anything done this week because there have been other things on my mind but I just couldn't figure out what was missing. All of a sudden the lightbulb turns on. It's absolutely silent. I hadn't plugged my iPod in.

I'm slightly saddened that I'm so dependent on it. I'd like to think that I'm not dependent on a whole lot of anything. It's no secret that I love little gizmos and gadgets. But my iPod is in a whole different league. I have an unnatural attachment to the thing. It's the best $300 I've ever spent.

ah, monday

Well, I can't say it was a good weekend.

Friday night I went to the all night softball tournament I explained two posts ago. It was a lot of fun and there are many, many drunken pictures from the evening. We got back around 5 am

10 am Saturday was wakeup time. Then I made the incredibly boring, 4 hour drive to Rochester. Saturday and Sunday were spent there at the hospital with Mom. I'm happy to report that the doctors are planning on moving her out of ICU today. Her doctor is also trying to pull some strings so she can get the evaluations for the lung transplant she needs done while she is there this week. At her consultation in June, they told her she would have to wait 6 months before they can do the tests. So if those evaluations get done, she'll get on the list a lot faster than she would have otherwise. :crosses fingers:

I got back to Brookings around 1:45 this morning. It makes for a pretty sleepy Monday, but things could certainly be worse.

I lied

This is SO not the greatest day.

My mom is in Rochester at the hospital. I have no idea how serious it is and I'm absolutely freaking out waiting for a phone call.

It's my very favorite day of the summer. Tonight is the all night softball tournament. Our first game is at 7:20 with games following at 10:35 and 2:15. There may be more games after that, it just depends on whether we win or not.

Not only is it a good night of friendship and drinking, it also is a fundraiser. Every year, the entry fees plus all profits from the beer garden help defray the medical costs for a person who really needs it. I'm not sure who it is going to this year but it will no doubt be a worthy person.

Most of tomorrow will be spent recovering. Maybe I'll rent some movies tonight to help me get through the day. Any suggestions?

After the game Saturday night , we checked into our hotel, then my posse and I went out for drinks. We ended up at The Local which is a very cool Irish pub. Their special that night was one of the tastiest things ever. A "Big Ginger" is Jameson whiskey and ginger ale, garnished with lemon and lime wedges.

Oh! And while you're there, see if Briañ is around. It seems that I missed him by a few minutes.

new toy

Thanks to the Missouri tax free holiday event last weekend, I picked this up at Best Buy. I have to admit, I felt bad for spending so much money on a spontaneous purchase, but the pictures it took at the game Friday night made all of the guilt go right down the drain.
So far I'm loving the camera. Now I just need to get out and find excuses to take pictures with it. I might have to go see the sights in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area when I'm there this weekend. I'll try to upload some KC pictures tonight.

feels like home

The new place is rocking my socks off. I love it there.

Our living room has this amazing comfy/home feeling to it. It's nearly impossible not to relax while you're watching a movie, a baseball game or just talking. Not to mention the giant west facing window in the living room is great for watching random, really awesome sunsets. Or, in last night's case, being able to watch the storm roll in was pretty fun too.

We're still working on getting a good internet connection. Our current situation can best be described as wonky. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Hopefully once it's up and running my posts will become somewhat regular again.
